At #HACKVAN2023, Don’t Go Hungry came to the hackathon needing assistance in various issues they had with their existing systems, the primary issue being that they do not have a digital database that they can use to seamlessly keep track of clients and create reports based on their clientele’s demographics. Problems such as connectivity to their Excel sheets slowed down their ability to get people to the food tables. A majority of the data entry that the DGH team does is manual; whether that is compiling stats for weekly reports or client registration, it is all done by hand. Problem Definition Our team set out to streamline the check-in, registration, and reporting system that would replace the paper forms and manual spreadsheet entries to save the DGH volunteers time. Potential Impact By providing the volunteers of DGH with a digitized system, we hope that they will be able to have a more holistic understanding of the people who come to them for help. DGH has been growing at a rapid rate, making it difficult for the team to find funding for more sustenance while continuing their mission of providing barrier-free food for their communities. Approach and Result We have created a mobile website that allows volunteers tasked with checking in and registering clients to efficiently carry out their tasks and keep track of information in real-time across the DGH client database. An embroidery kit designed to empower anyone wanting to feel confident embroidering, this kit provides all the necessary tools, instructions and answers, barrier-free and without jargon, for people with little to no familiarity with sewing and needlework. So, I planned and hosted a crochet workshop for beginners to start my research. Hosting that workshop unravelled my initial exploration and made me question what I wanted to say and share. Bridging the Gap I wanted to create a similar experience to my workshops where people would immediately have the answers to their questions and be able to see in-depth demonstrations of the necessary techniques. While working on kit instructions, I realized that crochet is not a low-barrier craft, requiring much more patience and even hand dexterity for a complete beginner. New Perspectives At the end of all the prototyping and kit testing, the feedback from testers had one underlying theme: there were lots of subtle cues that my testers struggled to get ahold of. “How do I make sure the thread doesn’t go through my fabric?” “Why is the thread on the back of my fabric getting all tangled?” It was these technical nuances that people struggled with, more so than the actual embroidery technique. I ensured that my written directions were clear and left the user feeling empowered to start embroidering, so I wanted the fabric exercises to reflect that. Brand Experience To stay true to the handmade feeling of the test kits, I sifted through different fabrics, cardstocks and papers that would visually work well with the kit and work with the risograph and screenprinting methods I was employing. The textures and patterns of my substrates inspired me to include more hand-drawn elements in my packaging and fabric exercises. Through Swiss style posters and postcards, viewers follow the story of Helvetica from its conception to the present day. This exhibit was created for both designers and the general public to learn about the beginning of Helvetica in Swiss style and how it became prevalent in the current design landscape. This exhibit was part of Peter Cocking’s yearly student-run exhibition, The Pop-Up Type Museum. In the fall of 2022, “Default” was displayed in the 11th annual Pop-Up Type Museum, “Deconstructing Type,” alongside twelve other students. the Downtown East Side. With the return of in-person tutoring sessions, VUM needed an extension of its tutoring program and visual language to express its commitment to providing a holistic learning environment for its students.&nbsp; The fictitious brand extension, Playroom, draws from VUM’s current colour palette and ethos of creating a healthy space for students to learn and play. Exploration Phase The potential space for the room had to have an existing structure that would encourage and add to the playful nature of the new identity. Near VUM's tutoring headquarters was the kids' room of Vancouver Public Library's Strathcona branch downtown. The vibrant colours and toys in the room inspired the title of the extended brand, "Playroom." Brand Experience Developing the brand based on play required a refresh of VUM's current colour palette. Saturating the existing brand colours allowed the brand to show playfulness while still owning the friendly and approachable nature of the original palette. Typography As for the typography, the display typeface, Acier Bat, was deconstructed into basic shapes, such as circles, squares and triangles, to form custom typography that speaks to VUM's tutoring approach, where students start by learning and strengthening the fundamentals, similar to how children first learn geometry through basic shapes. The custom letters can be used as display type or for signage, enabling the brand to exist and adapt to different rooms and locations. The 'rolling hill' imagery emerged as a combination of circle and square shapes from the typography to represent steps when overlapping one another and the outline of a person when alone. Environmental Design The visual elements on the sliding glass doors of the play area at the Strathcona VPL branch account for the heights and positions that adults and children may be in at any given time. In addition to the placement of the vinyl being higher or lower, the rolling hill shapes are transparent to ensure extra visibility into the room for the safety of the students, adult supervisors and While most spreads showcase poke as a hearty and energizing dish with its customizable ingredients, it's not often that one can come by a magazine spread that takes advantage of the lively colours of poke elements and culinary heritage starting back in Hawaii. This spread highlights ocean motifs and colours as a call-back to poke's Hawaiian origins, from a refreshing sea blue background to a playful squiggle in a salmon orange and even a display font that brings lively fun to the layout. "Throw the Bauhaus Under the Bus" is a workshop organized by Ramon Tejada and Silas Munro. It aims to challenge students to question and examine the "pedagogical impact" Bauhaus has had on design and design education. Students are asked to think about the stories they tell and how they engage with various design histories and cultures. By creating playfully and critically reflecting on models of thought that deem something to be 'good', unconventional ways for designers and people alike to "share, inform and live" can arise.This workshop took place on BlueJeans (a video conferencing app) over the duration of the fall 2020 semester. The fluorescent kraft-covered zines evoke the playful spirit of the workshop and online space in which the creating took place. As a way to remember the strange online space that each student traversed through, the inserts of the zine contain names, links and resources modelled after desktop tabs and website URLs. The hope is that this zine acts as a reminder that playful design is possible, no matter if it happens in person or online. This zine was created through online and in-person collaboration.
